Think A New Thought – Live A New Life
Ever wondered why you’re still struggling in that job you’ve been swearing you’ll leave for months? Or you’re sitting at home on the weekend fantasizing about Prince Charming instead of strolling down the beach with him at sunset? Or maybe you’re still driving around in that beaten up old Falcon you’ve had since college while watching your best friend pull up in that stunning new BMW?
So you’ve seen The Secret and you’ve heard the phrase “thoughts become things” a thousand times. And you’re banging your head against the wall repeating positive affirmations day in, day out but it just isn’t working. Well, take a moment to sit back and think about what you’re actually focusing on. Chances are, like most people, you are actually putting all your energy into what you don’t want rather than what you do want.
So often, instead of holding a clear thought about what we want in our lives, we’re spending our time thinking about our current circumstances and trying to wish them away. If you’re saying things to yourself like “I hate this job, I wish I could find another one”, all you are doing is putting your focus on the job you hate. And worrying about how you can make that change just reinforces your current situation. Worry breeds doubt that you will ever be able to achieve what you want and that just leads to more beating up on yourself and more negative thinking.
Our thoughts become things. This is a law as absolute and unbending as the Law of Gravity. Now what we need to realize, though, is that this law applies in all circumstances. It doesn’t matter if your thoughts are good or bad, positive or negative or whether we even understand the law or not. What you think about will turn up in your life sometime down the track. So choose your thoughts wisely.
Well, the good news is, that starting right now, you can consciously decide to change your thoughts. Inside us dwells a perfect guidance system but many of us, through our past experiences, have taught ourselves to mistrust what we feel inside. We end up feeling like life simply happens to us and we have no control in the matter. But the reality is, we are in control and we can be, do or have anything we want by choosing how we think and feel. And once you change the way you think, over time, all the good things you are focusing on will start to appear. All you could ever dream of is simply just a thought away.
Everything in our physical world begins and ends with thought. Clear, focused thought about what you want is the first step towards achieving anything you want in your life. But imagine you have this huge catalogue of everything you could ever possibly want but when you open it up there are no pictures or descriptions, or the pictures are all blurry and faded so you can’t make out what the items are, or maybe you see what you want but then the image keeps changing. How can you ever order what you want from a catalogue like this? You might just never get to choose a thing.
So the key is to know without any doubt in your mind exactly what it is that you want and to hold that image in your mind with absolute clarity and with as much detail as possible, using all your senses to see, hear, taste, touch and smell it. Energise your thoughts with strong positive emotions. Empower them with love instead of bolstering them with the fear that they will never materialize.
If you’re like many people and you don’t even know what you want, try this exercise:
Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths and focus on the feeling of being in your body for a couple of minutes. When you feel ready, open your eyes and take out a blank sheet of paper. Spend a minimum of ten minutes writing down everything you can possibly think of that you would like to be, do or have in your life, whether it be objects, situations, whatever it is you want. As much as possible, keep writing continuously and don’t censor what you write. And don’t restrict yourself by thinking that you can’t afford something or you’re not worthy of it – get it all down, it doesn’t matter how wild or crazy some things may seem. Now, every day for at least the next 30 days (or as long as it takes) rewrite your list without referring to the previous day’s list. As you move forward your list will grow shorter. Perhaps by day 30 you will have only three things on your list. Once you go three days in a row only writing these same three things you can stop. These are the things you really want.
But, a word of caution…. thinking about what you want with complete clarity and focus is still not enough. You MUST also take action to move towards what it is you desire while it starts to move towards you. Take advantage of all opportunities that come your way. Even baby steps are enough to demonstrate your desire. And don’t give up at the first hurdle. How boring would our lives be if we never encountered challenges?
So dream big. A man without dreams is dead. Throw yourself into your life, expect the best and embrace the challenges. And if what you want doesn’t come through for you, take another look – something even better may be just around the corner.
